Cooling Capacity (Size Considerations Room)

Cooling capacity of an air conditioner is very important when you are going to buy an AC.  Air conditioners remove both heat and humidity from the air. If the air conditioner is too large, it will cool the room, before it has a chance to remove the humidity. This will leave the room with a damp, clammy feeling. If it is too small, the intended room will leave you feeling hot.

Cooling power is measured in British Thermal Units per hour (BTU’s per hour), the basic measure of thermal energy. Refrigeration ton refers to the quantity of heat a conditioning unit can remove from a room per hours. As the Btu rating increases, weight, size and cost of the air conditioner will also increases.

1 ton= 12,000 BTU/hr

To find the cooling capacity for your room size, first you need to find out the floor square footage of the area to be cooled. To find out the square footage,

  • Find out the square footage of square and rectangular rooms by multiplying the width of the room by its full length.
  • For Triangular rooms multiply the length of the area by the width and divide by two.
  • Rooms with complex shapes, divide this into squares, rectangles and triangles and use the formulas above to determine the total square footage.

  • If your room is heavily shaded then reduce the capacity of the unit by 10 percent.
  • When it is very sunny then increase the capacity by 10 percent.
  • More than two people are staying in a room then add 600 BTUs for each additional person.
  • Unit is used in a kitchen then increase capacity by 4,000 BTUs.

Energy efficiency

Efficiency of a room air conditioner is measured by the energy efficiency ratio (EER). The EER is the ratio of the cooling effect measured in BTU per hour divided by the electrical energy input measured in Watts. The higher the EER rating, more efficient will be the air conditioner and also the power used will be less.

EER = (BTU/hr)/watt

One BTU per hour is equal to 0.293 watts.
